Before you do anything else, find out if your employer, union, or health and welfare fund offers a Group Retiree Medicare plan and if you qualify for it. Access to this valuable coverage can make a big difference when it comes time to make your Medicare decision.
Group Retiree Medicare plans are not available to everyone. But for those who have this choice, it’s often the best option. Here’s why:
Find out if you have access to a Group Retiree Medicare plan as early as you can. In fact, it’s best if you meet with your employer or benefit administrator as soon as you start thinking about retirement. This meeting may play an important part in your retirement and Medicare decisions.
Important: If you do not join a Group Retiree Medicare plan when you are first eligible – or during Open Enrollment – you may not be able to opt in later.
Group Retiree Medicare offerings can include Medicare Advantage plans (also known as Medicare Part C). Employers can customize a Medicare benefit package to meet the needs of their retirees. These plans often provide important benefits like vision, dental and hearing services, which aren’t included with Original Medicare.
Important: You must be retired, Medicare eligible (age 65 or older) and enrolled in Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) to join any Group Retiree Medicare plan your employer or benefit administrator may offer.
Group Retiree Medicare plan options differ. Use this discussion guide to learn more about your coverage options.
The easiest way to learn more about your Group Retiree Medicare plan options is to reach out to your employer or benefit administrator. And if you haven’t done so already, be sure to request your Medicare Timeline, too. It will set you on the road to understanding how Medicare works, when to enroll, and what post-retirement benefit plans may look like*.
